2001
The 138th edition was back to a more traditional format after the special features of the Millennium edition - and an old editor returned too, with Graeme Wright stepping back into the hot seat as Matthew Engel had taken up a Guardian appointment in America. The Five Cricketers of the Year, slightly overshadowed in 2000 by the Five Cricketers of the Century, returned to their former prominence. Two England bowlers - Martin Bicknell and Andy Caddick - balanced two Australian batsmen, in Justin Langer and Darren Lehmann, who had enjoyed sensational county seasons. Neatly, the fifth man was an allrounder, Mark Alleyne, who had also led Gloucestershire to a clean sweep of England's one-day trophies. The enduring fast-bowling partnership of Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh reached the end of the road, a fact marked ruefully by Mike Atherton, a frequent Ambrose victim, and Vic Marks. Meanwhile editor Wright had to cope with the match-fixing scandal: "Hansie Cronje's worst crime," he wrote, "was not against cricket, but against morality and decency."
